ANNOUNCEMENT - CITY BOARDS VACANCIES

City boards are essential to the success of municipalities. There are eighteen boards in the City of Sheffield with citizen volunteer members appointed by the City Council or mayor. These volunteer board members play a significant role in the success of the City of Sheffield.

The City of Sheffield is seeking applicants to fill vacancies on the following Boards:

Board of Adjustments

The Board of Adjustments is responsible for considering requests for variances from zoning ordinance regulations and for granting special use permits for uses of property that are not automatically allowed in a particular zoning district. The decisions of this board are final and can only be appealed to circuit court. There are five members and two alternates. Four affirmative votes are required to approve an item before the board. It is an important board.

Planning Commission

The Planning Commission is an important advisory board. Its responsibilities include consideration of the best use of land within the city and how it should be developed. The Planning Commission considers applications for rezoning property and changes to the zoning ordinance and makes recommendations to the City Council. It also considers applications for special use variances and makes recommendations to the Board of Adjustments. The Planning Commission is currently working on a new comprehensive master plan for the City of Sheffield.

Library Board

The Library Board is a governing board responsible for oversight of the Sheffield Public Library. The Library Board of Directors has authority over library personnel, policies and procedures. They have responsibility for financial oversight of funds appropriated by the City Council for library operations and asset management.

Beautification and Tree Board

The Sheffield Beautification and Tree Board was established to find ways to improve the appearance of the city. This includes encouraging property owners to make their property attractive by recognizing lawns of the month; organizing, conducting and participating in litter cleanups; and proposing and developing beautification projects. The Beautification and Tree Board is also responsible for the city's street and park trees assets. There are nine members with five representing one of the five city council districts and four at large members. There are vacancies for the district 3 and district 5 representatives and an at large member, currently. This board has tremendous opportunity to have a positive impact on the City of Sheffield.
